Native leaders from Hawaiian homelands to convene

News Release from SCHHA, Jul 05 2018

KAPOLEI, Hawaii—Native leaders from around the state, will come together on July 14 and 15 at the 2018 Homestead Leadership Summit. Hosted by the SCHHA, the oldest and largest coalition of experts and self-governing homestead associations dedicated to the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act of 1921, the summit agenda includes beneficiary rights and functions under the HHCA, as well as sharing sources of needed capital to build out homestead association projects.

“It’s a really cool summit,” said Robin Puanani Danner, the SCHHA elected chairman since the fall of 2015. “Our Oahu leaders, Iwalani McBrayer and Jodi Akau, from Kaupea and Kanehili homesteads are really creating a summit that participants will enjoy both in information and fellowship.”

The summit will be held at the Hampton Inn at the shopping mall built on trust lands in Kapolei, with a theme of “Our Land ~ Our People ~ Our Future.”

“Our two homestead associations are members of the SCHHA here in the Kapolei region, and we are looking forward to welcoming homesteaders from Oahu, from Molokai, Maui, Kauai and Hawaii island to our home,” said Iwalani McBrayer, SCHHA policy director of residential homesteading, and the vice chairman of the Homestead Housing Authority nonprofit.

Summit registration has hit maximum capacity at the Hampton Inn meeting space.

“It’s clear that there is a lot of energy and desire in the homesteads to push progress forward,” Danner said. “Our SCHHA executive council knows from the overwhelming interest in this summit, that we must conduct Homestead Summits on every island, and we will.”

One of the action items on the last day of the summit is to discuss the governor’s race between Colleen Hanabusa and David Ige, to get homesteaders into the voting booth on August 11 in the primary election.

“The governor is at the absolute top of every state agency, including the one that impacts us the most—the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands,” said Sherri Cummings, SCHHA Native Rights Policy director. “This election cycle has huge consequences for our homestead community, whether we will flourish the next 4 years or see very little accomplished. The governor’s race is where action or inaction will be the order of the day!”

SCHHA is the oldest and largest coalition of homestead associations unified to protect and advocate for the interests of beneficiaries of the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act of 1921.
