Sierra Club of Hawaiʻi Endorses David Ige for a Second Term as Governor

News release from Sierra Club of Hawai’i

HONOLULU, HAWAIʻI (June 24, 2018) — Sierra Club of Hawaiʻi members, families, and friends celebrated today on the lawn of the Capitol as they announced their endorsement of Governor David Ige for a second term.

“Powerful interests opposed David Ige in all of his efforts – interests that value short term profit over Hawai'i's long term security. But Governor Ige never once backed down,” said Colin Yost. “For his dedication to the public interest and for his determination to do what's right for Hawai'i's future, David Ige deserves our support and our votes.” Colin Yost is the elected chair of the Executive Committee for the Sierra Club of Hawaiʻi.

Jonathan Scheuer, chair of the Sierra Club’s volunteer political committee, called Governor Ige the climate governor as he listed the Administration’s many accomplishments to combat climate change.

“Governor David Ige is the exactly the kind of leader Hawaii needs right now,” Scheuer added. “We are painfully aware that on the national stage, we have leadership that values style over substance, reaction over deliberation, opinion over fact, and and aggression over compassion. Governor Ige provides the necessary counter balance to these efforts that tear at the fabric of our national and local society. He embodies our local value that one can disagree without being disagreeable.”

Governor Ige welcomed the endorsement noting that the Sierra Club has demonstrated its commitment to solving problems for the benefit of Hawaiʻi’s people and its environment.

In highlighting Governor Ige’s accomplishments, Sierra Club volunteers noted that:

• He blocked an aggressive mainland effort to replace our dirty oil burning power plants with only slightly less dirty gas burning power plants.

• He demonstrated national leadership by confirming Hawai'i's commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement

• He appointed highly competent commissioners to the Hawaii Public Utility Commission and is working with them on the urgent task of implementing Hawai'i's 100% renewable energy mandate

• He supported and signed a law making Hawai'i the first state in the nation to commit to being carbon neutral

The Sierra Club of Hawaiʻi’s works on behalf 20,000 members and supporters throughout the Hawaiian Islands to help people explore, enjoy, and protect the Hawaiian Islands.

SIERRA CLUB ENDORSES DAVID IGE FOR SECOND TERM AS GOVERNOR

News Release from Ige Campaign June 24, 2018

(Honolulu, HI) – The Sierra Club of Hawai‘i has endorsed Governor David Ige for a second term. The announcement was made on Sunday, June 24 on the lawn of the Hawai‘i State Capitol. The Sierra Club, is dedicated to protecting public health and the environment, combating climate change, and connecting people to the outdoors. In the U.S., the Sierra Club is the oldest, largest, and most influential grassroots environmental organization with 3 million members and supporters.

Governor Ige attended the announcement and said, “It is truly an honor to receive an endorsement from the Sierra Club of Hawai‘i. We should all aspire to their 20,000 members’ hard work statewide to take care of our earth. The Sierra Club of Hawai‘i has been a leader for 50 years in caring for our ʻāina. From restoring our rainforests to enhancing our water to minimizing CO2 emissions and preparing for climate change, I am committed to working with the Sierra Club to protect and preserve our environment for future generations,” said Governor David Ige.

The Sierra Club recognized Governor Ige for his commitment to protecting the environment, including his leadership on global climate issues by joining the U.S. Climate Alliance, adopting the Paris Climate Accord as state law, and actively championing Hawaiʻi’s goal of 100% renewable electricity by 2045. He has protected nearly 40,000 acres of watershed forests on four major Hawaiian islands, and preserved Turtle Bay Mauka from future development, which protects Hawaiian monk seal habitat and ensures public access to the shoreline.

As sponsor of the 2016 IUCN World Conservation Congress, Governor Ige brought together thousands of environmental leaders and decision-makers, government, indigenous peoples, business and academia from around the world to share best practices for protecting and improving the future of our shared planet. For Hawaiʻi’s part, Governor Ige established the Sustainable Hawai’i Initiative, which sets specific and measurable goals through sound resource management to ensure Hawaiʻi’s natural environment is healthy for generations to come.
