Police Pull out of Area, Looters Move In?  --KHON: While lava and quakes continue to impact lower Puna, there is also an unseen danger - sulfur dioxide gas being released by the lava.

"First responders felt sick," said Hawaii County Civil Defense Administrator Talmadge Magno.

Hawaii County Police Chief Paul Ferreira says it's not even safe for his officers to be in and patrol Leilani estates.

When asked about burglaries and looting, Ferreira said, don't believe everything you see on social media.

"Just FYI, as a fire chief, we ask you guys to stay out of the area," said Hawaii Fire Department Chief Renwick Victorino….

AP: ‘Reports of Looting’ --  Brad Stanfill says the lava is more than three miles (5 kilometers) from his house but he's still not being allowed in. He wants go home to feed his pets and check on his property. He's concerned about reports of looting.  One woman angrily told police guarding Leilani Estates she was going into the area and they couldn't arrest her. She stormed past the police unopposed.

SA:  Eight Fissures -- Five Homes Destroyed

May 5, 2018: Hawaii County officials say the eight lava fissures in Leilani Estates in lower Puna “went quiet” for now after destroying at least five homes since Thursday evening.

Talmadge Magno, administrator of Hawaii County Civil Defense, said this afternoon that the eight separate fissures now appear connected by the lava that flowed out of them. He said the seismic activity and the lava flows have “died down (but) we are pretty sure we are not done.”

Officials also want to set up a process to vet the residents to make sure people who do not belong in the subdivision are allowed in….

HAWAIIAN VOLCANO OBSERVATORY DAILY UPDATE

From U.S. Geological Survey, Friday, May 4, 2018, 7:45 AM HST

KILAUEA VOLCANO (VNUM #332010)

19°25'16" N 155°17'13" W, Summit Elevation 4091 ft (1247 m)

Current Volcano Alert Level: WARNING

Current Aviation Color Code: ORANGE

Summary: An eruption is in progress along Kīlauea Volcano's lower East Rift Zone. Since late afternoon May 3, at least three small fissure vents have opened in Leilani Estates subdivision in the lower Puna district. At this time, activity consists mostly of vigorous lava spattering. Additional outbreaks in the area are likely. Deflationary tilt at the summit of the volcano continues and the lava lake level continues to drop.

Photos and maps of activity will be posted to the HVO web site as they become available. https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanoes/kilauea/multimedia_chronology.html

Lower East Rift Zone:

The first outbreak of lava occurred late in the afternoon of May 3 following days of increased earthquake activity and ground deformation. As of this morning, three separate fissures have opened in the eastern portion of Leilani Estates. Each outbreak has been preceded by ground cracking and strong gas emission. Activity consists primarily of vigorous spattering of lava and development of very short lava flows that have yet to travel more than a few tens of yards from the vent. Earthquake activity in the area remains elevated and ground deformation is continuing. High levels of volcanic gas are reported around the fissure vents.

Residents of the Puna District to remain alert, review individual, family, and business emergency plans, and watch for further information about the status of the volcano. Hawaii County Civil Defense messages regarding conditions, warning, and evacuations may be found at http://www.hawaiicounty.gov/active-alerts/.

Summit Observations: Deflationary tilt at the summit continues. In concert, the summit lava lake is dropping. Tremor amplitude is fluctuating with lava lake spattering. Elevated summit sulfur dioxide emission rates persist. Gas emissions remain elevated. Current webcam views are here: https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanoes/kilauea/multimedia_webcams.html

Puʻu ʻŌʻō Observations: Seismicity remains elevated at Puʻu ʻŌʻō but tiltmeters near the cone show no significant deformation overnight. During fieldwork at Puʻu ʻŌʻō yesterday, no lava activity was observed in the area. The 61g lava flow is no longer being fed. The summit crater of the cone continues to collapse intermittently producing small plumes of ash; yesterday there were several episodes of ash emission in response to collapse, including immediately after the nearby M5.0 earthquake.

Evacuation Ordered As Lava Erupts in Leilani Estates

From Hawaii Tribune-Herald May 3, 2018 6:10PM: The crack in Mohala street has extended to a fissure between 150-200 yards long, gushing lava along its length, as of 7 p.m.

Hawaii County Civil Defense has ordered all residents of the Leilani Estates subdivision as well as Lanipuna Gardens to evacuate the area. Two Red Cross shelters have been established at Pahoa Regional Community Center and Keaau Community Center. The Pahoa Community Center will allow evacuees to bring caged pets; the Keaau Center will not allow pets.

Evacuees are advised to bring an emergency evacuation supply kit including medicine, food and other essential items.

Kim met with Governor David Ige and brigadier general Moses Kaoiwi Jr. of the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency. Both the county and the state are expected to issue emergency proclamations.

Resident Ikaika Marzo said he saw “tons” of lava “pumping” from a fissure in the ground, filling a space over a hundred yards wide.

“You never expect to see that kind of fountaining outside the crater,” said resident Dawn Javellana. “To see that so close to home, I never could have expected it.”...
