SENATE APPROVES RANDY AWO AS THE HAWAIIAN HOMES COMMISSIONER FOR THE ISLAND OF MAUI

The Hawaii State Senate recently voted to advise and consent the nomination of Randy Awo to the Hawaiian Homes Commission. Commissioner Awo will represent the island of Maui and his term runs through June 2019.
Mr. Awo hails from the island of Maui and most recently served as the Administrator for the Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE) branch of the State Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR).
A longtime beneficiary of the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands, Commissioner Awo brings over 32 years of experience in government and community relations to the Commission. In addition, he has an extensive background in conservation being one of the creators of the Ahupua’a management model which is aimed at protecting, managing and conserving Hawaii’s natural resources. Commissioner Awo holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

DAVID KAAPU REAPPOINTED AS HAWAIIAN HOME COMMISSIONER FOR WEST HAWAII (HAWAII ISLAND)

The Hawaii State Senate recently voted to advise and consent the reappointment of David Kaapu to the Hawaiian Homes Commission. Commissioner Kaapu will continue to represent West Hawaii (Hawaii Island) and his term runs through June 2021.
Mr. Kaapu is an attorney who specializes in quiet title; business law; wills, trusts, and general litigation; as well as land use. Mr. Kaapu has been a Commissioner of the Hawaiian Homes Commission for four years, where he utilized his legal knowledge to assist the Commission to make well-informed decisions on various matters. Mr. Kaapu has also served on a number of boards, such as the Hawaii State Bar Association, Friends of NELHA, Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union, and Agricultural Leadership Foundation of Hawaii.
Commissioner Kaapu graduated from the University of Hawaii with a Bachelor’s in anthropology (Hawaiian archaeology) and received his Juris Doctorate from Santa Clara University in 1988.

ZACHARY HELM APPOINTED AS NEW HAWAIIAN HOMES COMMISSIONER FOR THE ISLAND OF MOLOKAI

The Hawaii State Senate recently voted to advise and consent Zachary Helm to the Hawaiian Homes Commission. Commissioner Helm will represent the island of Molokai and his term runs through June of 2020.
Mr. Helm has thirty years of experience working with the Department of Parks and Recreation for the County of Maui. Mr. Helm served most of his tenure at the
Parks and Recreation as the District Supervisor III of the Molokai District, where he was responsible for the operations and maintenance of parks and recreational facilities, equipment, and recreation programs. Mr. Helm has proven his leadership as the Deputy Director for the Department of Parks and Recreation of the County of Maui.
Commissioner Helm is also active in the community, serving on various boards such as the Kalama’ula Hawaiian Homestead Association, Friendly Isle United Way, Molokai Catholic Community Council, and Molokai Little League Association. Commissioner Helm replaces Commissioner Gene Ross Davis who was hired as the District Supervisor for DHHL’s Molokai Office.
