GOVERNOR IGE APPOINTS TROY HASHIMOTO TO MAUI HOUSE SEAT, REPLACING LONG-TIME REP. JOE SOUKI

News Release from Office of the Governor, Apr 17, 2018

HONOLULU – Gov. David Ige appointed Troy Hashimoto to the Maui House seat previously occupied by former Rep. Joe Souki.

Hashimoto has served as executive assistant to Maui County Council Chair Mike White since 2011. He was also Maui County Democratic Party chair from 2013 to 2017. In addition, Hashimoto is the owner of TNH Productions, a multi-media organization. Previously, he worked as a recruitment coordinator for the University of Hawai‘i Maui College.

Hashimoto graduated cum laude from the University of Denver in Colorado, where he earned a Master of Business Administration. He was also valedictorian of his high school class at King Kekaulike in Pukalani.

“Troy will bring energy and passion to representing District 8 on Maui. He has a keen understanding of the issues that are most important to his community and I look forward to seeing what he accomplishes in the Hawai‘i State Legislature,” said Gov. Ige.

“I am humbled by the support and confidence of my Democratic colleagues and the governor on my selection. With a short period left in the legislative session, my top priority will be to advocate on behalf of the residents of District 8 to ensure their needs are represented and important projects are secured in the budget. I look forward to working with the community to make our home a better place,” said Hashimoto.

Gov. Ige is required by law to make his selection from a list of three nominees submitted to him by the Democratic Party of Maui.

MN: “I think it gives me a slight advantage being appointed, but the August primary is right around corner,” Hashimoto said.

Democrats submit nominations for 8th District seat

Maui News April 15, 2018:  Former Maui County Democratic Party Chairman Troy Hashimoto, former Maui County Council Member Dain Kane and attorney Joe Wildman were selected Saturday as finalists to fill the state House seat of former Speaker Joe Souki.

Their names were transmitted to Gov. David Ige, who will make the appointment….

Hashimoto is executive assistant to Maui County Council Chairman Mike White.  Hashimoto previously served as Maui County Democratic Party chairman for four years. He is chairman of the board of directors of Ka Ipu Kukui Fellows Program, which offers leadership training for young people on Maui.

Kane was elected to the Maui County Council in 1998 and held the Wailuku-Waihee-Waikapu residency seat for four terms until 2006. He again was a candidate for the seat in 2016, losing in the general election to Alika Atay.

Wildman is a personal injury attorney in the Wailuku law firm of Takitani, Agaran & Jorgensen.  In 2011, then-Gov. Neil Abercrombie nominated Wildman to be a 2nd Circuit Court judge. Wildman later withdrew as a nominee, citing an “unresolved situation” with his former Honolulu law firm….
