Complete Streets community events scheduled in Kāne‘ohe, Kailua and Pearl City

News Release from City and County of Honolulu, March 28, 2018

Honolulu – Did you know that when added together streets makeup the largest open space in our city, even more than our public parks? The City and County of Honolulu recognized this fact when the Complete Streets ordinance was adopted in 2012, and now the concept of “shared space” is coming to Kāne‘ohe, Kailua and Pearl City through several community events designed to inform the public and receive feedback.

“Complete Streets recognizes that roadways are one of our island’s most valuable assets to be enjoyed by all members of our community, and not just for the movement of cars,” said Mayor Kirk Caldwell. “I urge residents to take advantage of these upcoming events so they learn more about the city’s Complete Streets program, as we also learn from them regarding their needs and wants.”

Complete Streets is a transportation and design approach to create a comprehensive, integrated network of streets that are safe for all people, whether traveling by foot, bicycle, transit, or automobile. Since 2012, the city has changed how it plans, designs, and constructs its streets in accordance with the Complete Streets ordinance. The city’s Complete Streets program is inviting the public to attend several community events in Kāne‘ohe, Kailua and Pearl City for the following upcoming project areas and streets:

Kāne‘ohe: Kamehameha Highway from Likelike Highway to Kahekili Highway, Ha‘ikū Road and Kahuhipa Street between Kahekili Highway and Kamehameha Highway, and Kāne‘ohe Bay Drive between Mōkapu Saddle Road and Mōkapu Boulevard. Kea‘ahala Road between Kahekili Highway and Kamehameha Highway will also be studied.

Kailua: Kailua Road, Kalāheo Avenue, Ku‘ulei Road, Mokulua Drive, Oneawa Street, Kīhāpai Street, and Mōkapu Road. Kainalu Drive and Maluniu Avenue will also be studied.

Pearl City: Waimano Home Road, and area network roadways including Noelani Street, Ho‘omalu Street, and Ho‘olaule‘a Street, along with Moanalua Road, will also be studied.

Detailed project information is available online by visiting http://www.honolulu.gov/completestreets and clicking on the map for the specific project areas. Solutions being considered include, but are not limited to:

  • Pedestrian safety improvements
  • Dedicated bicycle facilities
  • Improvements to better accommodate transit users
  • Traffic signal timing
  • Streetscape features to improve the walking environment and livability of the community

Pop-Ups:

Pop-ups allow for community members to casually discuss the project at a convenient location within the project area.

Walking Tours:

The community can walk portions of the project corridors with planners and engineers to discuss current issues and opportunities for improvement.

Community Meetings:

A detailed presentation and charrette will be conducted to dive into the communities’ needs and interests. Refreshments will be provided at the community meetings.
