Visit SaveHawaiiNews.com to learn how you can help stop David Black and Dennis Francis as they seek to gut the Star-Advertiser newsroom.

SAVE HAWAI'I NEWS from its wealthy Canadian owner

Oahu Publications Inc (OPI)/Black Press has gutted the newsroom at the Star-Advertiser, cutting a quarter of the staff. Now publisher Dennis Francis of OPI, owned by Canada-based Black Press Ltd., is insisting on slashing wages and benefits for the remaining journalists.

Executives publicly brag about the company’s success while they quietly deliver layoff notices to the newsroom and refuse to provide any details behind the drastic cuts. Meanwhile, owner David Black is looking for funding for his proposed massive, multi-billion-dollar tar sands oil refinery in British Columbia and boasts it will be a great way to create jobs there.

Today, a sad, stark reminder of what Honolulu Star-Advertiser publisher Dennis Francis won't run in the pages of his own paper: another 10 newsroom employees have been laid off - with no specific reason given for the move. Former colleagues' names removed from their mail slots, joining the wall of others gone. Uncertainty lies ahead. In all, Francis and Canadian owner David Black have laid off about a quarter of Hawaii's largest newsroom in a year. Hawaii deserves better. #savehawaiinews
