OHA to hold community meetings statewide to update on Kakaʻako Makai planning process
News Release from OHA, May 17, 2017
HONOLULU (May 17, 2017) – The Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) tomorrow will hold the first in a series of statewide meetings to provide the community with an update on the planning process for its lands in Kakaʻako Makai.
Tomorrow’s meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at Windward Community College in Kāneʻohe.
In 2012, OHA acquired 30 acres of land in Kakaʻako Makai, valued at $200 million, as part of a settlement over longstanding claims for past-due revenue the state owed to OHA from the Public Land Trust. Shortly thereafter, the OHA Board approved a set of policies to guide the overall management and development of its Kakaʻako Makai parcels. OHA’s 2013 framework plan provided further guidance for the development of these lands. The plan established a set of three themes while also recognizing the need to generate an annual income from the Kakaʻako Makai properties that is consistent with its $200 million value. The three themes are:
- Create a kīpuka where Hawaiian national identity can flourish;
- Support a hālau ola that invests in native intellectual capital and innovation; and
- Integrate a planned community that embraces live, work and play ideal.
The upcoming meetings will provide the community with an update – and an opportunity to offer input – on the development of OHA’s conceptual master plan. The conceptual master planning process will further refine OHA’s Kakaʻako Makai development framework into specific land use recommendations and include the drafting and submission of an environmental impact statement.
