"BULLY BILL" PASSES HOUSE
From Hawaii Family Forum, April 11, 2017
The House Voted overwhelmingly to Pass SB 501 HD2 today.
10 House Members voted against the measure. Those members are:
Representative(s) Cachola, DeCoite, Har, Kong, McDermott, Oshiro, Say, Tokioka, Tupola, and Ward.
Representative Lauren Matsumoto voted yes with reservations.
The other 40 members voted yes.
Although changes were made in the House Judiciary committee (HD2), local Alliance Defending Freedom allied attorney Jim Hochberg believes that the bill most likely will not pass a constitutional challenge. Although a California ruling is on appeal to the United States Supreme Court, similar laws have been struck down in New York, Maryland and Austin, Texas.
The bill has "crossed over" back to the Senate where it is expected to go to a conference committee consisting of members from both chambers. Members can only be assigned to the committee if they voted "yes" or "yes with reservations." There are no more opportunities for public input but conference committee meetings are open to the public.
We will keep you posted of the progress.
