Caldwell Commits Then Fails to Show to Debate

News Release from www.Djou.com

(October 31, 2016, Honolulu, Hawaii) - The Filipino Press Club of Hawaii hosted a mayoral debate this morning. Both the Caldwell and Djou campaigns committed to this debate last week. This morning, however, only Charles Djou actually appeared at the debate.

"There is a clear difference in this mayoral campaign between continuing with the status quo under Caldwell and our campaign of positive change to fix rail, reduce homelessness and restore ethics," stated Djou. "I am not afraid to explain our campaign's vision for the future of Honolulu at a forum like the Filipino Press Club. The people have called for more debates between the mayoral candidates and I agree."

The Filipino Press Club President, Rick Agnes, stated that the Caldwell campaign committed to attending this event, and even confirmed the Mayor's participation when asked this past Friday, but failed to appear.

On October 7th, Caldwell called for more debates between himself and Djou. Djou promptly agreed that more debates were needed. Since Caldwell's public call for debates, the mayor has refused to appear at multiple mayoral debates and forums:

  • On October 12th, Djou appeared, but Caldwell did not attend, the Maunawili and Olomana Community Associations' candidate forum;
  • On October 21st, Djou appeared, but Caldwell did not attend the Olelo mayoral debate. (Caldwell had also been offered an Olelo debate date October 12th or 14th, but declined to accept those dates either.)
  • On October 29th, KPRP radio hosted a mayoral candidate forum. Djou appeared, but Caldwell did not attend.
  • Today, the Filipino Press Club hosted a live mayoral debate to also be re-broadcasted on KHPR radio. Djou attended, but Caldwell refused to appear after committing to attend.
  • Tomorrow, Djou will appear on KHVH radio. Caldwell has declined to attend this radio forum.

Charles Djou is running for Mayor of Honolulu. He represented Hawaii's 1st Congressional District in the U.S. House and previously served on the Honolulu City Council and Hawaii State House.  Djou is an Army Reservist and Afghanistan war veteran.  He is married to Stacey Kawasaki Djou and together they have three children.
