Maui Region Names Dr. Barry Shitamoto as Interim CEO

News Release from Maui Region HHSC September 23, 2016

The Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation – Maui Region announced today that its Board of Directors have selected Dr. Barry Shitamoto as Interim Chief Executive Officer effective Nov. 1, 2016.

Dr. Shitamoto will succeed outgoing Maui Region CEO Wesley P. Lo who will leave the Maui Region on Oct. 31, 2016.

“Dr. Shitamoto has a long relationship with the Maui Community, serving in a number of leadership roles to benefit Maui Region, including Chief of Staff, MMMC Foundation Board Chair and most recently, the Maui Region Board,” said Maui Region Board Chair Avery B. Chumbley.

“Our priority remains the safety of our community, and the board wanted to ensure that its next CEO had the experience to manage care decisions, while ensuring a seamless transition to Kaiser,” said Chumbley.

Dr. Barry Shitamoto graduated from Lahainaluna High School, and received his Bachelor of Arts in Microbiology and his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He has been a staff pathologist with Pan Pacific Pathologists, LLC at the Maui Memorial Medical Center since 1989, and has served on a number of Maui based boards.

“I am looking forward to the challenge of engaging and collaborating with the various stakeholders of Maui’s healthcare to further address the needs of our community and ensure a safe transition to Kaiser in 2017,” said Shitamoto.

“Wes and his team have done such a great job of growing the healthcare options available to our residents, and it is a privilege to be able to continue to do that work,” said Shitamoto.

Shitamoto is married to Lynne Shitamoto, and together they have three daughters and one grandson, with a second grandchild due next February.
