Ige Admin Denies Proposing Superferry Revival

... just when you thought you were seeing a glimmer of leadership ....

News Release February 5, 2016

Aloha all – Despite today’s Star-Advertiser headline and story (Ige floats proposal to bring back ferry service), the governor has not submitted a proposal to revive the SuperFerry. The Dept. of Transportation provided the following information in response to the article:

  • HDOT is abiding by Senate Concurrent Resolution 181 passed in the 2015 legislative session calling for a state study of an interisland ferry system.
  • The study was not proposed by the Ige administration.
  • In the 2016 legislative session lawmakers have introduced nine new bills regarding a ferry system that also call for studies and environmental impact statements. Six are from the House and three from the Senate.
  • HDOT supports the intent of a ferry system study, as it could be a facet in the HDOT sustainable transportation initiative which promotes alternative modes of transportation.
  • The greatest challenges to a successful interisland ferry system in Hawaii are community support, environmental impacts and profitability of services.
  • A study will help determine if a ferry system is feasible, economical or embraced by the stakeholders including the community and potential riders.
