STATE REPRESENTATIVE ANGUS McKELVEY AGREES TO PAY $2,000 FOR CAMPAIGN REPORTING VIOLATIONS

News Release from Office of Hawaii Attorney General, November 6, 2015

HONOLULU – State Representative Angus McKelvey, District 10 (West Maui, Maʻalaea, and North Kihei), pleaded no contest today in district court for failing to file a complete and accurate candidate committee report and allowing an unauthorized person to receive and disperse campaign funds.

Under the terms of a plea agreement reached with the State and accepted by Honolulu District Court Judge Clarence Pacarro, Rep. McKelvey agreed to pay two thousand dollars ($2,000) to the Crime Victim Compensation Fund and publish an apology in the Maui News, in exchange for the State not objecting to his motion for a deferred acceptance of his plea.

Kristin Izumi-Nitao, Executive Director of the Campaign Spending Commission said, “We appreciate the fact that the Department of the Attorney General shares our concerns over the seriousness of candidates who fail to report contributions and expenditures in their disclosure reports. Prosecuting these cases guarantees the integrity and transparency of the campaign finance process that the public is entitled to.”

Attorney General Doug Chin said, “As we head into the 2016 election cycle, my office will continue to work with the Campaign Spending Commission to make sure campaign dollars in Hawaiʻi are collected and spent with transparency.”
