Huber: Hawaii School Board decision is concerning

by Bob Kellogg, OneNewsNow.com, August 17, 2015

Students in Hawaii will be subject to sex-ed classes with an emphasis on pregnancy prevention rather than abstinence, whether they or their parents like it or not.

On a 5-1 vote, the Hawaii State Board of Education recently mandated that public schools offer sex-ed next year rather than allow each school to make its own decision on the matter. Valerie Huber of the National Abstinence Education Association is concerned.

"This new legislation is really making it so that the young people in Hawaii are not receiving adequate information and skills that are going to help them to avoid all the risks," she laments.

She is content with the current number of teens in Hawaii choosing to remain abstinent.

"But when you start mandating a sex-education program that not only normalizes but gives passive endorsement for harmful and unhealthy behaviors, I'm very concerned for the youth in Hawaii as a result," Huber comments.

Also under the new legislation, parents will have to opt-out their children from the sex-ed classes. Previously, schools required parents to opt-in their children.

Before the school board's decision, Hawaii was one of only ten states that did not mandate that sex-ed classes be taught in all public schools.
