Bill deadline passes, long-time legislator joins NFIB state leadership council

From Hawaii NFIB

New Leadership Council Member Named

Former state Rep. Barbara Marumoto, a longtime member of the Hawaii House of Representatives, recently joined the NFIB’s Hawaii state leadership council, which is chaired by attorney Ron Heller. She, along with a team of volunteer leaders, will welcome NFIB/Hawaii members and legislators at an informal reception at the Hawaii State Capitol on Friday, March 13 at 4:00 p.m.

NFIB members are invited and encouraged to attend and discuss in greater detail the critical business issues that we face as independent business owners. For more information, please visit the NFIB/Hawaii web page,or send an email to NFIB Hawaii State Director Melissa Pavlicek, or call her at 808-447-1840.

Bill Deadline Passes

A key internal deadline at the Hawaii State Legislature passed this week, eliminating many of the 2,894 proposals that were initially introduced. The deadline, known as "first lateral" bills, means that bills not approved by the committees to which they were first referred will not be advancing.

Crowdfunding Exemption

One of the bills that NFIB/Hawaii supports is, however, continuing to move forward. The “Hawaii Invests Local Act” (House Bill 1482) aims to establish a crowd-funding exemption for limited intrastate investments between Hawaii residents and Hawaii businesses. The investments raised are limited to no more than $1 million in a 12-month period, and no more than $5,000 per investor.

Other Bills

We are also continuing to oppose measures that are adverse to small business, including bills that would require employer-paid employee and family leave and extended periods of protected leave for small employers, even those with just one employee.
