Honolulu 31st Lowest Concentration of Disadvantaged

With the winter holiday season upon us and hunger, poverty and homelessness continuing to affect tens of millions of our fellow Americans, the leading personal finance social network WalletHub followed up on its report on the Most and Least Charitable States with an in-depth analysis of 2014’s Cities with the Highest and Lowest Population in Need.

In our attempt to inspire goodwill toward our neighbors, WalletHub ranked the 150 most populated U.S. cities to find the highest and lowest concentrations of disadvantaged people. We analyzed each city across 16 key metrics such as the poverty rate, the food insecurity rate and the percentage of maltreated people.

Key Stats

  • The poverty rate is seven times higher in Detroit than in Overland Park, Kan.
  • The percentage of households receiving public assistance is 18 times higher in Newark, N.J., than in Overland Park, Kan.
  • The unemployment rate is five times higher in Detroit than in Lincoln, Neb.
  • The percentage of homeless population is 10 times higher in Tampa and St. Petersburg, Fla., than in Cincinnati and Baton Rouge, La.
  • The percentage of households with no health insurance is eight times higher in Brownsville, Texas, than in Worcester, Mass.
  • The violent crime rate is 45 times higher in Detroit than in Irvine, Calif.
