Hospital Financial Crisis Brings House Health Committee to Maui

The Health Committee of the Hawaii State House comes to Maui on Mon., Nov. 10th to hear public testimony related to the financial crisis at Maui Memorial Medical Center (MMMC). The public is invited to present oral and written comments at Maui Waena School at 795 Onehee St. in Kahului beginning at 5:30 p.m. This input will help in shaping proposed legislation expected to be heard in the next session of the Hawaii State Legislature starting in January 2015.
Rep. Della Au Belatti (D - Oahu) chairs the committee. The visiting House committee has ten members. Maui members are Reps. Mele Carroll (D) and Justin Woodson (D).
The Maui facility faces a ballooning deficit projected to reach $39 million for fiscal 2016 which begins on July 1, 2015 according to Maui hospital CEO Wes Lo.
MMMC is a state run facility. It is Maui’s only acute care hospital. MMMC is the largest hospital in the Hawaii Health System Corporation (HHSC) composed of 12 public hospitals. The Maui facility employs over 1,400 workers.
