CITY TO DISCUSS ALA MOANA TOD DRAFT PLAN

News Release from City and County of Honolulu August 20, 2014

The Department of Planning and Permitting (DPP) will present the draft Ala Moana Neighborhood Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) Plan at a community workshop August 27.

The workshop will be at 6 p.m., August 27, in the Washington Middle School Cafeteria. Mayor Kirk Caldwell is scheduled to speak at the event. Light refreshments will be provided.

The draft plan is the culmination of two earlier public workshops, numerous advisory committee and stakeholder meetings, and recommendations from the public to create a community-based vision for the area within walking distance of the Ala Moana Center rail station. The station will create opportunities for new housing and jobs, restaurants and other retail shops, improved public spaces, and safer conditions for walking and biking.

“The Ala Moana area is one of the most vibrant communities along the rail transit corridor, but there are so many opportunities to improve on what we have to make it an even more livable and walkable community,” said Mayor Kirk Caldwell. “The residents there have stepped up to let us know what they want, and it’s time for the City to step up and make this plan a reality.”

This workshop will give residents a chance to review the draft plan, as well as offer comments. Once all of the comments are reviewed, a final plan will be submitted to the Planning Commission and then City Council for consideration and approval.

The draft plan of the Ala Moana TOD is available online at www.todhonolulu.org. For more information, contact Harrison Rue, Community Building and TOD administrator, at hrue@honolulu.gov, or 768-8294.
