Video: Advocating for Native Hawaiians
From Grassroot Institute July 18, 2014
In this edition of E Hana Kakou, Grassroot President Keli’i Akina interviews Keali’i Makekau, a Native Hawaiian activist. During the conversation, they consider what it means to be Native Hawaiian and discuss whether state and federal agencies (like OHA and the Department of the Interior) should have a role in the formation of a Native Hawaiian government. Although Mr. Makekau believes in an independent Native Hawaiian state unlike Dr. Akina, they both agree that the United States government and the State of Hawaii should have nothing to do with creating such an entity. The question of who benefits from the push for a Native Hawaiian “tribe” is explored along with the question of how to effectively promote Native Hawaiian advancement.
