Djou: Independence, the Strength to Vote for Change

July 4, 2014

Aloha

My family and I wish you a Happy Independence Day.

As you enjoy the holiday, I want to share with you what it means to me and to my family.  After growing up in Hawaii, I had the privilege of attending college in Philadelphia and was able to see Independence Hall first-hand.  Last year, I was excited to have the opportunity to bring my children to visit Philadelphia and share with them the incredible courage of our founding fathers in signing the Declaration of Independence, and how that simple act of courage, could have and did cost some of those signatories, their lives.

Today, in our government, we can remember and replicate that same courage and firm belief in liberty shown by our nation’s founding fathers.  I know in politics these days it is so easy to look at the corruption, ethical lapses and simple incompetence that seem to pervade Honolulu Hale, the State Capitol and Congress, and want to give up on government because no one is listening.  Instead, I ask you to revisit the true meaning of Independence Day.  That we Americans have within us the strength and ability to change our community, our state and our nation for the better.  All it requires is a little bit of courage and a willingness to vote against the status quo.

To accomplish that, we have four short months. Any of the following will help get our message out:

I know we can do this if we all work together.  Have a wonderful 4th of July weekend and I look forward to working together with you to ensure that we have a better and more responsive and effective government that we all deserve.

Aloha,

Charles K. Djou
