Moving Up. Back on track with $1.1 billion budget turnaround.
by Abercrombie for Governor, January 18, 2014
When Governor Abercrombie took office three years ago, our state government had a $220+ million deficit.
Working closely with public employees and legislators, he turned that deficit into $844 million in the black.*
Sound financial management required making tough decisions and hard choices. All with NO furloughs** (This is a lie. Abercrombie continued Furloughs, renamed as DLWOP Days, through 2011 and into 2012.), NO layoffs and NO labor disruptions. (But plenty of strife--see below)
With our financial health back on track, we can:
- Reduce our long-term debt
- Put funds away for a rainy day
- Invest in airport modernization, improve school facilities and address traffic on highways
Building a strong foundation for a brighter future.

“This administration has made significant strides in restoring the state’s fiscal health, strengthening the local economy, and paving the way for universal access to preschool in Hawaii.
