OHA Chair Machado Hospitalized: Suffers Stroke After Gay Marriage Hearing

OHA Statement Nov 2:  Office of Hawaiian Affairs Chair Colette Machado has been admitted to The Queen’s Medical Center and is undergoing medical care. Machado’s condition is described as stable. She was admitted Friday night.

Machado’s family is asking for privacy at this time.

OHA Chair Colette Machado Hospitalized After Stroke

SA: Office of Hawaiian Affairs Board Chairwoman Colette Machado is in an Oahu hospital in stable condition after collapsing Friday night at the state Capitol.

State Rep. Karl Rhoads, House Judiciary chairman, announced Saturday morning before the resumption of a committee hearing on Senate Bill 1, the same-sex marriage bill, that Machado suffered a stroke Friday night and was taken to the Queen's Medical Center.

"After the hearing last night, Trustee Colette Machado had a stroke," Rhoads said. "So I hope that all of you will keep her in your thoughts and prayers as we go forward today."

Machado had testified before the House Judiciary Committee and the House Finance Committee in opposition to gay marriage during the hearing late Friday.

Machado Expected to Make Full Recovery

SA: Office of Hawaiian Affairs Chairwoman Colette Machado is expected to make a full recovery after suffering a stroke Friday night.

"Mahalo to everyone for their thoughts and prayers," Machado said in an OHA news release this evening, adding, "I feel great."

Machado expressed gratitude to her family and friends, who helped her and called 911 immediately, and for the prayers from her church family....

Dr. Cherylee Chang, director of the Stroke Center and Neuroscience Institute at the Queen's Medical Center, said Machado could be released from the hospital as early as Tuesday.

OHA chairwoman on the mend after suffering a stroke

MN Nov 9, 2013: Machado had suffered a stroke, but "not a major stroke," an OHA spokesman told The Maui News on Friday morning.

"It happened (last) Friday evening, but I talked to her on the phone Sunday and she sounded like herself," Garett Kamemoto said. "It was less than 48 hours after and she was talking on the phone and walking around the hospital."…

As of Friday, it was unknown when Machado was expected to be released from the hospital.
