Police investigate threats, harassment related to Mayor’s veto of Bill 2491

LĪHU'E - The Kaua'i Police Department is investigating threats made against government officials and private property owners that are related to the recent decision by Mayor Carvalho to veto Bill 2491.

“We are currently investigating personal threats against Mayor Carvalho that have been made via phone, email, and social media since the Mayor’s announcement to veto Bill 2491,” stated Police Chief Darryl Perry. “We take these threats seriously and are moving forward to identify these individuals.”

Kaua'i police remind individuals that harassment and threats of violence against persons or property are illegal and punishable by law. Chief Perry adds that should any threat meet federal statutory requirements, KPD will consult with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to adopt the investigation and prosecute identified suspects at the federal level.

Preliminary investigations reveal that these are the actions of individuals who are not representative of the anti-GMO movement here on Kaua'i.

“These are individuals who are unable to control their emotions and are not representative of our community members who are respectful of each other and Mayor Carvalho,” added Chief Perry.

Police investigate threats to Kauai Mayor over GMO veto

HNN: Kauai police are investigating threatening phone calls, emails, and social media posts targeting Mayor Bernard Carvalho, Jr. after his veto of a controversial bill on pesticide use and genetically modified crops.

Angry protestors showed up outside his office on Thursday. They chanted "Shame on you!" and "Recall the mayor!" He told them that he supports the intent, but that the bill is legally flawed.

"I just want to make sure that we are in line. I'm with you all the way," Carvalho said. "The veto part is the route that I need to take to get to the same place we want to be."
