Poelman Appointed Maui Judge

News Release from Hawaii Judiciary October 16, 2013

Chief Justice Mark E. Recktenwald has appointed Lloyd A. Poelman as judge of the District Court of the Second Circuit (County of Maui).

Poelman has practiced law for 27 years and has been a partner in the Wailuku firm of Poelman and Langa (fka Langa, Franco and Poelman) since 1998. His practice includes personal and business law, personal injury, bankruptcy, insurance defense, property law and estate planning. Poelman has also served as a per diem judge presiding in the District Family Court on Maui since September 2005.

Poelman received his law degree from the Brigham Young University J. Reuben Clark Law School in Provo, Utah, in 1985. Poelman is active in professional, public and community service organizations. He is an arbitrator with the Court Annexed Arbitration Program, and a current member and past president of the Wailuku Community Association.

The chief justice appoints District Court and District Family Court judges from a list of not less than six nominees submitted by the Judicial Selection Commission.

If confirmed by the State Senate, Poelman will serve in office for six years. Because the Chief Justice has the discretion to assign judges to the district or district family court calendars, Poelman may serve in the District or District Family Courts.
