Family Promise of Hawaii to host two open houses at its Windward and Honolulu family center locations

News Release from Family Promise of Hawaii

Honolulu, HI – Aug. 30, 2013   Family Promise of Hawaii, an innovative program that helps families with children escape homelessness, will host an open house at each of its two family center facilities on Oahu.

The first event will be held on Sunday, September 8, from 2:00 – 5:00 pm at the Family Promise of Hawaii family center at the Harry and Jeanette Weinburg Kukui Center, 245 North Kukui Street, Suite 101, in Honolulu. Another open house will be held on Sunday, September 22 from 2:00 – 5:00 pm at Family Promise’s Windward Family Center in Kailua, 69 North Kainalu Drive.

Family Promise of Hawaii is one of the fastest growing of 182 affiliates nationally. More than 1,500 volunteers from 26 host congregations and 37 support congregations on Oahu’s Windward side and Downtown Honolulu, provide shelter and meals to homeless families on a rotating basis. During the day, clients go to work or to one of the family centers where staff help them look for jobs, housing and meet other personal goals such as financial literacy.

“The open houses will give our volunteers an opportunity to see the family centers where our families go during the day. It’s also a good way for those who are interested in our program to get acquainted with the program and the facilities, and talk with the staff about the case management services, counseling and training that clients in our program receive,” said Family Promise of Hawaii Executive Director Mary Saunders.

Saunders invites all who are interested in the organization to come and meet the staff and members of families who have transitioned into housing and maintained full-time employment with the help of the organization.

According to Saunders, more than 80 percent of participants transition from homelessness to housing within three to four months.

The nonprofit first opened its Windward Family Center in Kailua in 2006, and subsequently opened its second center in 2007 at the Kukui Center in Honolulu. Since its founding in 2006, Family Promise of Hawaii has helped more than 1,000 parents and children.

For more information or to register for the open house, call (808) 548-7478 or send an email tovolunteer@familypromisehawaii.org
