GOVERNOR CLOSE TO CALLING SPECIAL SESSION IN SPITE OF PUBLIC STATEMENT TO THE CONTRARY

News Release from Hawaii Family Forum August 29, 2013

In spite of the public statement made on Wednesday, August 28, 2013, by Speaker Joe Souki that a special session would not take place at this time, Governor Abercrombie seems to be posturing to do so so anyway.  (Read his statement here and see the marriage redefinition bill he submitted to our legislators.)

As we stated in our notice yesterday, the battle to redefine marriage to include same-sex partners is not over.  We also stated that a special session could be called at any time.

Many of you have contacted us asking what you need to do to stop this from happening and there is only one answer - you must take a moment right now to tell your Representative that you do not want same-sex "marriage" in Hawaii.  Many of you have friends and family that feel the same way so ask them to do the same thing.

Click the link below and send a message to your representative (even if you have do so already) and make it very clear that you do not support same-sex marriage and you want them to vote NO on the Governor's proposed legislation.

Your action made a HUGE difference and now is the time to finally make it extremely clear to our legislators, and the Governor, that we do not want marriage redefined.  We must continue to ask that a decision of this much importance should be put directly to the people for a vote.  As we stated so strongly in 1998, LET THE PEOPLE DECIDE.

Please remember that this issue is very emotional for some people and as Christians, we must always be the bearers of light and truth.  Keep the Governor, our legislators, and the people of Hawaii in your prayers.

Mahalo for making a difference in our community.

EARLIER STATEMENT: SPECIAL SESSION UNLIKELY AT THIS TIME

News Release from Hawaii Family Forum August 28, 2013

Governor Abercrombie announced today that it is unlikely that a special session to redefine marriage to include same-sex couples will happen at this time.  This is extremely good news in light of reports just a week ago that a special session was imminent.

Many of you contacted your legislator, and the Governor, to ask them not to redefine marriage.  We truly believe this made a difference.  More importantly, however, many of you made the commitment to pray for our legislators fully understanding that a decision of this importance cannot be made hastily and without regard to the wider community.

We are grateful to the Governor, and the legislature, for making the right decision.

Keep in mind that a special session can be called at any time, so we must remain vigilant. Speaker Souki said in an interview today that the legislature will continue to discuss the merits of the draft that's being presented by the governor.  The issue is far from over, but we are grateful that our efforts have made a difference in the community.

A special mahalo to the 100+ courageous pastors that stood up for marriage and the right to practice our religion in Hawaii freely.  Most of all, thank YOU for your continued prayers and action.
