Support Hawai‘i's Fishermen and Traditional Fishing Practices
To: PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals)
As Native Hawaiians and residents of Hawai‘i, we take serious offense at your public attack upon a local fisherman for catching ahi (tuna). Fishing is a critical part of Hawai‘i's native culture. Subsistence fishing and sustainable fishing practices have been feeding Hawai‘i's families for thousands of years. Fishing also supports the livelihoods of many local families.
Actions like yours are ignorant and offensive. They are counter-productive to the many organizations that work in Hawai‘i to create co-existence among our different cultures and natural resources.
We demand an apology to the fisherman and his family. We also demand an apology to the people of Hawai‘i who have been the caretakers of these islands and their oceans for thousands of years.
We urge your organization to undergo cultural education and sensitivity training immediately as to avoid such blatantly ignorant and offensive actions in the future.
