Honolulu County Council Vice Chair Ikaika Anderson filed papers with the Federal Campaign Commission July 11 to form a campaign committee. The forms, which were filled out July 5 but not received until six days later, indicate Anderson is seeking the nomination for the Congressional District 1 seat being vacated by Colleen Hanabusa, as a Democrat. His treasurer is Stacey Edralin.
Anderson is not obligated to resign his Council seat to run for Congress. He represents Council District 3 which includes Kaneohe, Kailua, and Waimanalo, all of which are located in Congressional District 2. As a councilmember, Anderson is required to live in his district. Candidates for US Congress are not required to live in the district they seek to represent.
