Dear Friend:      July 12, 2013

Aloha! I hope this finds you and yours well.

Sometimes in life it's just time to start a new chapter. That's what I'm doing in joining Outrigger Enterprises Group as Senior Vice President and Chief Legal Officer on July 22nd.

I've greatly enjoyed my legal career, since ’07 with Bays, Lung, Rose & Holma, a great firm of great lawyers and staff serving great clients. And my political career, while I didn't achieve all that I had hoped, has been deeply fulfilling, with challenges faced, contributions made, friendships forged and promising opportunities right over the horizon.

But I've always looked for that next mountain to climb, that next contribution to make, and Outrigger is an opportunity I can't resist.

Like so many of you, I practically grew up with Outrigger. A now-66 year old local company which has stayed true to its Hawai’i roots and values, Outrigger wrote the book on Hawaii's travel and tourism industry and, with its 4,200 employees, is central to 25%-plus of Hawaii's economy.

Today Outrigger is writing its own new chapters, sharing what makes Hawai’i so special beyond our shores throughout the Pacific and Asia and now, in Mauritius, almost to Africa. I've always believed not only in being the very best we can be in Hawai’i, but also in our ability to rise to the top throughout the rest of our country and world, whether it be in politics, business, lawyering, sports, music or any other field. In joining Outrigger, I hope to contribute in this way not just to the Outrigger ‘ohana's future but to Hawaii's as well.

With this new path, I won't be a candidate for public office as long as I'm with Outrigger. Since I hope that's a long time, this likely ends any further political career. But I fully intend to continue to participate in the public life of our Hawai’i and country and look forward to those opportunities.

To each of you who's supported and voted for me throughout my political endeavors, I again extend my humblest and most heartfelt mahalo. We truly have made a lasting difference together, and words do not express my gratitude. I urge you to stay involved as we all need you, and Audrey and I truly look forward to staying in touch and to helping you along your own paths.

To those who've listened and considered, I deeply appreciate you. And if we've disagreed, e kala mai - please forgive me; I meant no offense, and thank you for caring.

To all, I will enjoy continuing to talk story and work with you in this next chapter. E malama pono and a hui hou ... take care, be right, until we meet again.

Ed
