Hawai`i Republican Party Promotes Responsible Reuse and Recycling to Raise Money for the HRP Mortgage Fund
News Release from Hawaii Republican Party, National Committeewoman Miriam Hellreich
On June 29th and 30th, the Hawai`i Republican Party (HRP) headquarters looked more like a department store than a political operation. The Capital Campaign Committee, chaired by Hawai`i Republican National Committeewoman Miriam Hellreich, and HRP Treasurer and Sidewalk Sale Chair Marcia Klompus worked with volunteers from the Oahu League of Republican Women to organize and execute this first-ever event.
Under the leadership of Marcia Klompus, committee members Carol Thomas, President of the Oahu League of Republican Women, and Helen Kekuna, George Kekuna, Alan Silva, Ione Gumpfer, Janice Pechauer, Cindy Rosebrough, Nancy Gallagher, Celyn Chong Kee, and many other volunteers worked tirelessly for the last month to solicit, collect, and stage treasures donated from the community at large to be sold in a 2-day, no overhead fundraising sale to help pay down the mortgage for the HRP headquarters.
“We were overwhelmed by the positive reaction from the public”, said Klompus. KITV news, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, and Pacific Business News among other local media covered the story. Visiting journalists were shown the donated treasures which included a “Sports Room” with gently used golf clubs and exercise equipment; designer clothing and handbags; outdoor grill kits; kitchen gadgets; antique vases; candelabras; costume jewelry; and a variety of books.
Several hundred people visited the sale over this 2-day period to browse and purchase items and get acquainted with the HRP. Some people wanted to wish us well in our work to build a two party system in Hawai`i. Some wanted to sign a party card to join the HRP, and others wanted to say hello to some hardworking Republicans. Some were bargain hunters looking for a good deal, but all received a warm and friendly reception from the party chairman, David Chang, and the many volunteers who were wearing red aprons and greeting and visiting with each and every guest.
There are a number of treasures remaining, and sales are continuing for those who would like to drop by over the next week to browse and make purchases. So far, we’ve raised over $5,000 which the Capital Campaign Committee will use to pay down the mortgage on the HRP headquarters.
The HRP Capital Campaign Committee will consider doing Sidewalk Sales again in the future. “It sends the right message to the public that Republicans are responsible people who believe in reuse and recycling, protecting our environment, keeping expenses down, and, at the same time, raising money to pay off our mortgage. It also opened the door to meeting many citizens whom we might never have met. “We made a lot of new friends during the 2-day sale”, said Klompus.
