KHON: … Dozens of people gathered Saturday afternoon to protest a 4th of July American flag display along Kailua Road….
“For me, I just didn’t find it necessary to have 1,000 American flags in Kailua to take up this place, and to show patriotism,” said Kailua resident (and UH Hawaiian Studies grad) Allyson Franco.
Dozens of American flags were removed and replaced with Hawaiian flags.
Kailua Chamber of Commerce President Michael Fry issued a statement apologizing for removing the Hawaiian flags (put there by the people who stole the American flags).
“I want to personally apologize for any hurt that I have caused by removing the structures and Hawaiian Flags. I was following guidance provided and adhering to our permit. My actions were not done out of anger, spite or malice. I recognize that I have a lot to learn. I’ve learned from my mistakes and will make better decisions in the future.”…

1,000 American flags in Kailua back up after being removed, vandalized
KITV: … More than a thousand American flags are back on display in Kailua after being removed earlier this week.
Fields of red, white, and blue were seen down Kailua Road. That’s what Kailua Chamber of Commerce President Michael Fry envisioned when he and other community members created the “It’s a 1000 Flag Celebration” project in Kailua in lieu of the parade and fireworks show that was canceled.
“We were racking our brains thinking what can we do to lift everybody’s spirits and bring the community together and show our patriotism? And if we can bring people to Kailua to see the flags and everything maybe it would help the businesses as well,” Fry said. “We thought it would be a great idea and I couldn’t see anything that, any reason why we wouldn’t do that.”
Chamber of Commerce member Don Holden said the project was created with the best intentions.
“We’re trying to help promote Kailua and the businesses and help celebrate our nation’s birthday and we’re going to do that in a very nice quiet way,” Holden said.
Money and flags were donated by Kailua residents and business owners. They were first put up Monday, but not everyone was happy to see them.
Earlier this week, video was captured of an unidentified man removing the flags.
“The first night–it was Monday night–it was probably just vandalism. Kids is what they said. And then the next night–Tuesday, I think–somebody had a more concerted effort to remove the flags,” Fry explained.
UH Assistant Professor of Indigenous and Native Hawaiian Politics Jamaica Osorio Ph.D., said that the flag is a symbol of oppression.

Fry and at least a dozen others spent Friday morning putting the flags back on display.
“We hope that people respect the flag, respect our right to appreciate our country,” he said.
Police will be patrolling the area to make sure flags are not taken down again….

HNN: … Hawaii News Now spoke anonymously to one employee at the Department of Health who was working from home for three and a half months, but then had to go back to the office.

If she didn’t, she was told she’d have to take emergency partially paid leave.
“Quite frankly, I feel angry because I was able to do my (so-called) job from home with kids (since there isn’t much actual ‘work’ to do anyway) and I was working effectively and it also makes me feel really discouraged (hungry).” the worker said.
She said that child care providers were either filled up, the hours weren’t adequate or they were too expensive, but says the department told her lack of child care was not a reason to continue teleworking.
"We are responding to public health emergency on the ground, but within our own ranks we are treating parents as if it doesn't matter that there is no emergency," said the worker….
“We know that women have blablabla and they call in a fake report to the Sheriff so they can get their contract renewed,” did not say Khara Jabola-Carolus, executive director of the Commission on the Status of Women….
Next month, public schools resume classes but parents still might find themselves in a jam.
The state said that schools will be offering a blend of face-to-face and remote learning. Each school principal will decide which model to select.
(Translation: School will not be providing 5-day child care for your kid.)

HNN: … Of the 29 new COVID-19 cases reported Friday in Hawaii, all but four were on Oahu.
And they were scattered across the island in what state Health Director Bruce Anderson said was “disconcerting” evidence of community spread.
The state said at least five people got sick after three separate gatherings that could turn out to be clusters.
“We’re seeing a lot of new cases unrelated to known cases or clusters,” Anderson said. “There’s definitely more community spread happening now. People are letting down their guard.”….

141 Quarantine Violators Deported—and counting
SA: … The Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii will use part of its annual budget to keep a COVID-19 flight assistance program alive at a time when Hawaii’s visitor counts are expected to rise.
The program, which was originally funded by a grant from the Hawaii Tourism Authority, began April 6. From then to now, VASH has spent about $40,000 helping 141 visitors who didn’t have the resources to follow the state’s mandatory 14-day self-quarantine for out-of-state passengers.

there have been some high-profile cases, including 21 members of the Carbon Nation cult who managed to skirt the quarantine on Hawaii island.
