Mauna Kea Protest Shows Need for a Return to Elected County Sheriffs
The Decade of Getting Priced Out
HNN: … For tens of thousands of Hawaii residents in the 2010s, the financial stress of living in the islands proved too much. Over the course of the decade, Hawaii’s population actually declined as residents left for the mainland seeking a lower cost of living or a pathway to homeownership….
Moore said many of his students are already planning to leave for the mainland after graduation.
“A lot of young people just don’t see a future here," he said.
They don’t see themselves getting the kinds of opportunities in Hawaii that they might on the mainland, being able to raise a family in the islands or becoming homeowners.….
University of Hawaii professors Craig Howes and Jon Osorio, dean of the Hawaiinuiakea School of Hawaiian Knowledge, started the decade recognizing that Hawaii was facing mounting and longstanding problems that it needed to address ― or face the consequences….
(OHA rent-seeking behavior—backed by Osorio--is a key cause of the high cost of housing in Hawaii.)

Deadline arrives for TMT protesters to remove structures at Mauna Kea
HNN: … Thursday marks the deadline that was reportedly set by the state for Thirty Meter Telescope protesters to remove their structures at Mauna Kea, but it’s still not clear what will happen.
TMT opponents said the state Land Department officers told them they have until Dec. 26 to start removing their structures — including the “kupuna” tent — at Mauna Kea, but they say haven’t made a decision on what they’ll do ultimately….
CB: The Protesters should be allowed to decide whether or not to continue breaking the law
HTH: “Right now, Dec. 26 is not a relevant date,” Kim said.

Ala Wai: Height Restriction Behind P3 Failure
SA: … Despite sound reasoning for a P3 venture — lease rents could create a plentiful funding stream for harbor maintenance and upgrades — the first two partnership tries have come up short. The first, launched more than a decade ago, failed amid public criticism as developer Honey Bee USA Inc. — picked to lease and improve two parcels — failed to execute even the bare bones of a makeover.
Late last year, the second try appeared far more promising, with more than two dozen interested parties offering up mixed-use ideas for residential and commercial construction. However, at deadline time, just a few proposals were submitted to a review committee, and no selection was made.
The drop in interest was due in part to requirements resulting from public input, such as one limiting construction to a two-story height. …
With DLNR’s division of Boating and Ocean Recreation resetting for a third P3 try, the 2020 Legislature should support a tighter watch on activity and upkeep at Ala Wai harbor to prevent further declines on the 11-acre parcel of docks, slips and now-vacant land.

You will now become Hysterical About Waste from Nuclear Weapons Testing
CB: … The Runit Dome in the Marshall Islands is (not really) cracked and in (no) danger of spilling its radioactive contents into the Pacific Ocean….
(Note: Edits to induce honesty are in parenthesis. Meanwhile, please continue to show no interest in Russian and Chinese nuclear weapons waste.)
