Poll: 77% Support Telescope
HNN: … “TMT has been very patient. We worked very long and very hard to comply with all laws and regulations. We’ve also worked long and hard with the community and to develop understanding and respect for the culture. We are and have been prepared to access the site, but our legal rights to access have been blocked. We don’t have the power to clear the blockade. We need to depend on law enforcement to do that. It’s a very difficult and urgent situation for us.”
When asked how long TMT was willing to wait before making their next move, Ishikawa said, “This has been a really unprecedented situation, and I honestly don’t know at this point.”
Ishikawa referenced a previous poll of residents showed there was a “huge majority that does support TMT.”
One poll from 2018 conducted by a mainland company and published by the Honolulu Star-Advertiser asked 800 registered voters across the state for their thoughts on the telescope being built on Mauna Kea.
Of those polled, the numbers reflected 77 percent supported the project in its currently planned location; 15 percent opposed, and eight percent of people were undecided….

OHA Trustee Bob Lindsey Supports TMT
BIVN: … Trustee Robert Lindsey, who has represented Hawaiʻi Island on the OHA board since 2007, is a member of PUEO (Perpetuating Unique Educational Opportunities), which is supportive of the Thirty Meter Telescope project.
“The OHA Board in April 2015 changed its policy decision regarding the TMT from ‘support’ to ‘no position.’ Why?” Lindsey stated in an email message. “Because we have beneficiaries who oppose the TMT. And those who support the TMT. That policy decision remains in effect.”…

Former Official of Crooked Painters Union Trying to Convince Council to Require Union Contractors on City Projects
CB: … Local labor unions say Honolulu could increase the hiring of local workers and reduce delays caused by labor disputes with a new City Council measure, but the proposal is getting pushback from a group representing nonunion shops.
Bill 37 would lay the foundation for a community workforce agreement, also called a project labor agreement or PLA. According to the Hawaii Construction Alliance, such a deal could help rein in the use of low bid out-of-state and unscrupulous contractors on Honolulu public works projects worth more than $250,000.
If passed, the City and County of Honolulu would be the first local government in the state to implement a PLA to cover such a sweeping array of public projects.
“Let’s preserve the jobs for local people and make sure everything is being done above board,” said Nathaniel Kinney, the alliance’s director. …

SA: …The PhyloChip, a microbial source tracking tool, was used for the first time in Hawaii to study the Mahaulepu and Waikomo watersheds.
After analysis, Berkeley Lab microbial ecologists Gary Andersen and Eric Dubinsky found no signs of fecal indicator bacteria in the waters, the state Health Department said.
“We conducted a study using the latest technology available and determined the high bacteria counts in Mahaulepu Valley, which have been a concern for many years, is not linked to any human sewage sources in the area,” said state Health Director Bruce Anderson in a news release. “With this new information, we can assure the public that recreational waters in Waiopili Stream and nearby beaches do not pose an imminent health threat to swimmers.”
The state said the lab’s findings validate the results of a similar 2016 survey of Waiopili Ditch in Mahaulepu Valley, which was conducted at the time in response to concerns raised by the Surfrider Foundation’s Kauai Chapter.
Members of Kauai Surfrider, however, are not yet convinced the water can be declared safe from bacteria.
