Hanabusa’s Legislators Choke on Plan to Push Homeless Back onto Streets

HNN: A new state budget is on track to being approved after House and Senate committees finalized House Bill 1900 Friday.

The budget bill emphasizes spending on homeless services and improvements to medical care.

"Instead of dividing various amounts for separate programs, the state Homeless Programs Office needs the flexibility to decide where best to use the money," State Rep. Sylvia Luke said. "The state cannot be rigid, especially with our homeless population. It must be able to move funds around to take care of circumstances as they come up."…

$28,000,000 in operating subsidy for Maui Health System....

$15,000,000 lump sum to fund homeless programs and services across the state…. (Listen?  Do you hear them choking?)

The legislature will vote on the bill next week. If approved, it will be sent to the governor's desk….

Kaniela ‘2%’ Ing Caught Lying About Non-Existent Master’s Degree—Makes up More Lies to Explain it Away

HNN: …For years, congressional candidate Kaniela Ing's LinkedIn page said he received a master's degree in public administration from the University of Hawaii.

The academic credentials were repeated in a story in the Maui News and on voter information websites like Project Vote Smart and Ballotpedia.

But Hawaii News Now has learned he never completed the degree….

… Ing, a state representative (and BMW repairman), said he never claimed to have completed the degree.

He said that he made an inadvertent mistake (uh-huh) on his LinkedIn page seven years ago, before he dropped out (uh-huh) of the UH master's program. He added that the mistake was later picked up by Maui News and voter websites (uh-huh).

"The Linkedin was (written in) 2011 and the last time I updated it was that session," said Ing. "It says 'expected completion date' and I put '2012' and I haven't updated it since then." (uh-huh)

But Ing has been updating other parts of the page. He recently included his current run for Congress on the site.  (Ooops!)

He told Hawaii News Now he finished all of the course work for the master's degree, but did not complete a required practicum. (His lips were moving.)

He said he plans to correct the entry, and added that he recently asked the Maui News to correct a story mentioning his master's degree.

He said that the newspaper declined to fix the error. The newspaper's managing editor told HNN that Ing made no such request….  (LOLROTF!)

Revealed: Kirk Caldwell is a Nigerian Prince

HNN: Senator Roz Baker of Maui says people told her they were getting weird messages from her on Facebook.

Then she found out scammers had used a photo from her personal Facebook page and started sending messages with a bogus offer appearing to have been endorsed by the senator.

"Apparently the message went was 'yes this is true I used it. I got $70,000 and I was able to pay all my bills,'" said Baker (D-South and West Maui).

One friend wired $500 dollars to a Western Union on the mainland and the friend asked Baker what happened to the money which is now gone.

"It breaks my heart that someone who trusted me got duped in this fashion," she said.

The social media accounts of other elected official are getting targeted.

"We got a report that there's a fake Mayor Caldwell Facebook page," said Deputy Chief John McCarthy of the Honolulu Police Department.

McCarthy says this phony Caldwell page solicited an offer of up to $5 million in loans.

"If you look at the page, it's a little suspicious because there's only a few photos from the past few days," said McCarthy.

HPD says check the URL address which should be short with the person's name. The URL address for the fake Caldwell facebook page is lengthy and has a foreign name. It's a classic Nigerian Scam.

Hawaii Sugar Killed by Mexican Dumping?

OS: …U.S. sugar policy has been the cheapest major commodity policy for over a decade. For 14 of the last 15 years, U.S. sugar policy has cost U.S. taxpayers zero dollars.

In the one year that there was a cost, 2013, Mexico was illegally dumping and subsidizing sugar it sold to the U.S. And the U.S. International Trade Commission voted unanimously — twice — that Mexico was breaking U.S. trade law.

Unfortunately, while that case was dragging on, Hawaii’s sugar business ended after over 150 years of production….

Kauai could have used the Superferry

SA: I can’t help but wonder how the opponents to the Superferry on Kauai, who were in the ocean on surfboards, canoes and kayaks forming a human blockade, feel now for their fellow islanders who are stranded and isolated on Kauai following the recent storm devastation.

The Superferry could have been so much more helpful than a Chinook helicopter in getting much-needed supplies and equipment over to Kauai.
