HCDA informational hearing on June 7 at 10:30 on Kakaako Makai Rule Amendments
News Release from Friends of Kewalos, June 2, 2023
Aloha Everyone!
The Hawaii Community Development Authority (HCDA) is finally amending its rules to conform to HRS 206E-31.5 prohibiting residential development makai of Ala Moana Blvd. -- what many of you fought hard for in 2006 and have persevered in keeping open the coastline of Kakaako Makai.
Attached is the Kakaako board agenda. Foremost is the prohibition of residential development on Makai land but there may be other provisions that are being amended in the Makai plan and rules. The board packet is not yet available but when it is you can see it at: https://dbedt.hawaii.gov/hcda/events/agendas/
This is an important opportunity to weigh in on why residential development was prohibited and should continue to be restricted for the health of the Makai lands and benefit of current and future generations. You can also add that the rules should conform to SB1417 which requires Kaka'ako developments to consider climate change and SLR in design & siting of buildings. It just passed this session (Gov has yet to sign; but since he is a strong advocate for climate change adaptation and greening of our state, I doubt that the bill would be vetoed).
Please submit your testimony and also send this to your network of people concerned about preserving our coastline. You can see how to participate here: Agenda
