2023 Hawaii legislative wrap-up: the highlights and the lowlights

The Grassroot Institute of Hawaii is hosting events across the state in May to discuss how key measures fared at the Legislature this year

News Release from Grassroot Institute, April 26, 2023

Find out how economic freedom and accountable government fared at the 2023 Legislature during three presentations in May sponsored by the Grassroot Institute of Hawaii.

The luncheon events on Maui, Hawaii Island and Oahu will feature Grassroot Institute staffers Malia Hill, policy director; Ted Kefalas, director of strategic campaigns; and Joe Kent, executive vice president. All three have been closely involved in this year’s legislative proceedings.

Keli‘i Akina, Institute president and CEO, will moderate the Maui and Oahu events. Kent will moderate the Hawaii Island presentation.

Specific topics will include Gov. Josh Green’s tax plan, housing affordability, government transparency and corruption, the state general excise tax, medical licensing and the state budget.

Hill, Kefalas and Kent will discuss which bills of interest passed, which ones failed and which ones we are likely to see again in 2024.

Each event will feature a Q&A session for audience members to ask questions of the speakers.

The events will be:

>> On Maui, Tuesday, May 9, at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului, starting at 11:30 a.m. Admission is $10 and includes a light lunch and parking.

>> On Hawaii Island, Wednesday, May 10, at the Hale Iako building in Kailua-Kona, 73-970 Makako Bay Drive, starting at 11:30 a.m. Admission is $10 and includes a light lunch and parking.

>> On Oahu, Thursday, May 11, at a private club in Downtown Honolulu, starting at 11:30 a.m. Admission is $30 and includes lunch and parking.
