Hearings for SB33 Ammo and SB882 Training Requirements
from HiFiCo, Feb 8, 2023
Unfortunately SB1230 and Honolulu Bill 57 on sensitive places are advancing. Senate public safety committee is very hostile to guns with only Senator Awa voting no. The Honolulu City Council is more moderate as council members Andria Tupola, Val Okimoto, and Augie Tulba voting no. They did their homework, asked the hard questions and put the pressure on the Mayor's representatives. Both bills still have several hearings to go through.
NEW HEARINGS Set for Friday February 10:
Please continue to submit your written, remote, and in-person testimony.
SB33 Ammo purchase and transfer restrictions, CPN/PSM 3-10-23 10am rm229 -- Text, Status
Oppose this bill. You must show the registration form of your firearm to purchase or transfer ammo for it. We all know prohibited persons (felons) will not obey this and will find someone to purchase the ammo for their illegally obtained firearms. All this does is put more paperwork and liability on the sellers and police departments who are already understaffed. This would severely affect instructors teaching firearms classes, hunters with loaned firearms, multi-caliber firearms, shooting fairs/events, rental firearms, etc.
SB882 : Permit to acquire/CCW requirements, PSM 3-10-23 3:05pm rm225 -- Text, Status
Oppose this bill. It would require 14 hours of classroom instruction+2 hours live fire to purchase a handgun. There also is no grandfather clause for all those who already have a handgun safety affidavit. Which means everyone will have to complete these new requirements.
It also requires for CCW:
1) An in person interview with HPD or authorized representative
2) Disclosure of spouse or partner and any other adults you live with
3) Disclosure if any minors live with you
4) 4 character references
5) A list of current and former social media accounts
This violates ones right to privacy, objective standards as mentioned in The Supreme Court Bruen decision, and much more.
