A bird flu wiping out mainland egg farms has not spread to Hawai’i so local producers may gain an advantage.
A reader from Maui tells Hawai’i Free Press, “I ended up buying the lowest priced eggs at Tamura's Wailuku store. They were local, from WAIALUA EGG FARM - egg carton says, ‘Island Eggs from the North Shore of Oahu,’ cost over $6 for a dozen. This was the first time the Maui market ever carried this local brand. The prices at the grocery store are killing me, everything seems like it is double plus what it was before Xmas. Can of tuna used to be 99 cents, today $1.79.”
