SB1425: Legislative Committee to discuss banning all Oahu Landfills
By Grassroot Institute @ 12:53 PM :: 6381 Views :: Maui County, Education K-12, Energy, Environment

2011 Senate Bill 1425 (Relating to banning the acceptance of solid waste in landfills)

  • Introduced by Sen. Maile S.L. Shimabukuro (D) on January 26, 2011, prohibits landfills in counties with populations greater than 500,000 from accepting municipal solid waste, beginning 7/1/12. Prohibits landfills in counties with populations less than 500,000 from accepting municipal solid waste after a date determined by council resolution.
  • The committee(s) on ENE/PGM has scheduled a public hearing on 02-10-11 at 3:30 p.m. in conference room 225.

Where on Oahu  is solid waste supposed to be disposed of after July 1, 2012?

According to Senate Bill 1425, relating to banning the acceptance of solid waste in landfills, no landfill in a county with a population greater than or less than 500,000 residents, will be allowed to accept deliveries of municipal solid waste - beginning  July 1, 2012, for Honolulu, and for the smaller counties, a date to be determined by their councils.

Unfortunately, in the five short paragraphs that make up this bill, it does not address where solid waste statewide is going to be disposed after these dates. But the author of this bill appears to have left a loophole for folks who have “special” waste, which is prohibited from being banned in landfills. Now it would help if a description was provided for what is considered “special” waste.

For answers, show up for the public hearing on this bill today at 3:30 p.m. in conference room 225, and bring your “special” garbage to see if passes muster.
