City’s free COVID-19 testing program to end on December 30, 2022

News Release from City and County of Honolulu, Dec 6, 2022

HONOLULU – In consultation with the State Department of Health (DOH) and consistent with the strategies outlined in the DOH’s statewide COVID-19 Transition Plan, the City and County of Honolulu will cease testing operations at the Airport Mobile Lab at the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, Honolulu Hale, and Kapolei Hale after December 30, 2022. The Transition Plan calls for shifting testing away from community testing sites and instead through traditional healthcare settings and home tests. Data for COVID-19 case trends and test site usage rates over the past several months support this transition.

“I would like to offer our warmest mahalo to the dedicated staff from the National Kidney Foundation of Hawai‘i who have worked tirelessly to keep our entire community safe from the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Mayor Rick Blangiardi. “These men and women showing up day in and day out, even on holidays, putting their own health at risk to make sure we were mitigating the spread of the coronavirus on O‘ahu. Well done! Bravo!”

“We appreciate the City helping to make testing accessible for the community,” said State Health Director Dr. Elizabeth Char, FACEP. “It was a good community resource and allowed people to make informed decisions to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.”

The City is working with non-profits that provide medical assistance to underserved communities as well such as Community Health Centers to distribute the remaining test kits from the City’s free COVID-19 testing program.
