Manoa Rep Dale Kobayashi Speaks at Antivaxxer Rallies

by Andrew Walden

House District 23 surrounding the UH Manoa campus is represented by the biggest antivaxxer in the Hawaii State Legislature--Dale Kobayashi.

His constituents may not know it, but antivaxxers do.  Here is how Kobayashi was introduced at a Kapiolani Park antivaxxer rally, March 20, 2021:

“Dale understands that there is no time left to sit on the sidelines, and has stated that ‘We are literally at a point right now for all of humanity – for what it means to be human.’ He has been the primary sponsor for our bills to add a conscientious exemption to school vaccine mandates as well as this year’s HB241 and HCR146 to prevent discrimination based on vaccine status. Dale was put into a coma and almost died from a smallpox vaccine as a child, so he understands first had how important bodily autonomy is. Let just hope he runs for Governor sooner than later and gets that other guy outta here.”

Kobayashi also spoke at an antivaxxer rally at the State Capitol in January, 2020.   At both rallies Kobayashi was joined by antivaxxer conspiracy profiteer Del Bigtree who helped spread the lie that MMR vaccinations cause autism.

In his Kapiolani Park speech, Kobayashi says he contacted encephalitis in 1971 and says he knows it was the result of a smallpox vaccination seven years earlier in 1964.

Smallpox vaccination in the US started with Thomas Jefferson and Ben Franklin personally inoculating and later vaccinating hundreds of people.  In 1977, 201 years after the American revolution, the disease, which killed as many as 300M people in the 20th century, was declared eradicated

Kobayashi has introduced four antivaxxer bills in the last two years.  These include:

Kobayashi told the crowd, “Hope we have a lot more rallies like this. The media looks at us as a fringe element. My colleagues in the House think there’s one guy that believes. That’s me. I tell them I got an army behind me.”

Now that the cat is out of the bag, will voters in Manoa reelect their antivaxxer Rep in 2022?
