ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR CHIEF OF POLICE

The Honolulu Police Department (HPD), an organization embracing diversity and committed to serving the City and County of Honolulu with integrity, respect and fairness, is currently seeking candidates for Chief of Police.

The HPD is comprised of over 2,500 authorized sworn and civilian staff positions and has an annual operating budget of approximately $250 million. HPD serves as the primary law enforcement agency for the City and County of Honolulu, which is the entire island of Oahu. Oahu has a population of approximately one million residents and hosts over 5 million tourists who visit annually. The Honolulu Police Department is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA).

The Chief of Police provides executive direction for the administration of fiscal, operational, and departmental objectives, and oversees the development and implementation of organizational goals, policies and programs of the HPD. Exceptional leadership and managerial skills required. The Chief of Police shall serve to uphold the standards of safety and excellence in preserving and protecting the peace, the rights of persons, and property; enforcing of State and City laws; and preventing crime.

The Honolulu Police Commission shall appoint the Chief of Police for a term of five years, subject to the Revised Charter of Honolulu. The Chief shall not serve beyond expiration of the term unless reappointed by the Honolulu Police Commission.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: (See the Revised Charter of Honolulu, Section 6-1603) 

  • United States Citizenship. 
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university. *Copies of official transcript(s) or diploma(s) with embossed seal must be submitted with your application. 
  • Experience: Five years law enforcement experience; three in a responsible administrative capacity.

APPLICANTS MUST POSSESS: 

  • The highest degree of personal and professional integrity, moral character and personal stability; 
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills; 
  • An ability to interact efficiently with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures; and 
  • Collaborative and progressive vision about police functions that best serve the needs of the community

The selectee must pass a required medical examination, drug-screening test, and standard screening checks
