Mayor Victorino issues statement about proposed restaurant and bar occupancy limits
News Release from County of Maui, May 28, 2021
Gov. David Ige has informed Mayor Michael Victorino that the governor has denied the mayor’s request to increase occupancy limits to 75 percent as part of an easing of COVID-19 restrictions on business establishments.
The governor said he preferred a statewide approach to occupancy rules and wants to wait until the State of Hawaii has vaccinated at least 60 percent of residents before allowing higher occupancy. Mayor Victorino had proposed to increase from 50 percent to 75 percent for restaurants and bars.
“We were responding to reasonable requests from our business community to ease restrictions in light of declining COVID-19 case counts,” Mayor Victorino said. “However, I understand Governor Ige’s reasoning. I urge everyone to get vaccinated, so we can get on the road to recovery and herd immunity.”
