Aloha        February 7, 2020

As the HiRUC demonstration moves into 2020, we’d like to provide an update and let you know of an opportunity to participate in a new phase of the project.

Since November, the Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) has sent over 100,000 customized driving reports–about one for every six households in Hawaii. Each report shows how much drivers would pay for miles driven compared to how much they pay in gas taxes. If you own a vehicle, you will likely receive your customized driving report sometime this year, not long after your safety check. When you do, please complete the questionnaire. Your input is critical to the project. If you have already received your driving report, you can fill out the questionnaire by clicking here.

We are excited to announce we are now recruiting volunteers to participate in the next phase of the HiRUC project. Each volunteer will choose one of three technologies for reporting vehicle mileage automatically. Volunteers can choose between submitting a photo of their odometer using a special smartphone app, or plugging a special mileage meter into their vehicle.  Those that choose the plug-in mileage meter can decide whether they want the device to have location-based features, or no location-detecting capabilities.

In the coming weeks you will receive more information on how you can volunteer for the technology test phase of the HiRUC project. In March, volunteers will receive email invitations to enroll. We hope you will consider taking part!

Mahalo,

HiRUC Team
