OHA hires Kuhikuhipu‘uone to develop Kaka‘ako Makai masterplan
News Release from OHA
HONOLULU (Jan. 13, 2015) – The Office of Hawaiian Affairs today announced it has selected a design team to develop a conceptual master plan that sets out a vision for 30 acres in Kaka‘ako Makai.
OHA awarded Kuhikuhi Pu‘uone Collaborative a $2.9 million contract for a process expected to take two years to complete and fulfill the potential of Kaka‘ako Makai to generate revenue that could support the agency’s efforts to fund community based programs aimed at improving conditions for Native Hawaiians.
The collaborative is a partnership among four Hawaiian firms: Edith Kanaka‘ole Foundation; DTL; PBR Hawai‘i; and WCIT Architecture. The partnership’s contract requires its leadership team to actively seek input from the Hawaiian community during the master planning for Kaka‘ako Makai.
The master planning for Kaka‘ako Makai comes about two years after OHA acquired the 30 acres valued at an estimated $200 million from the state in a deal meant to resolve a dispute that dates back to when the agency was formed in 1978.
The conceptual master plan for the nine parcels that make up the 30 acres fits into the agency’s strategic priority to be able to use the land to generate significant revenue to meet demand for such OHA resources as the $1.3 million, on average, it lends annually to Hawaiian businesses and consumers.
“This new partnership moves us a step closer toward realizing the longer term vision for Kaka‘ako Makai,” said Kamana‘opono Crabbe, the Ka Pohana and Chief Executive Officer at OHA. “We look forward to encouraging collaboration in developing a conceptual master plan for Kaka‘ako Makai.”
