Hawaii: Senate Public Safety Committee to Hear CCW Restriction/Reform Legislation

News Release from NRA-ILA, MONDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 2023

Today, at 3:00PM, the Senate Public Safety Committee will hear Senate Bill 1230. This bill is Hawaii’s attempt to ignore the U.S. Supreme Court’s Bruen ruling from last year, which affirmed the right-to-carry, and is similar to what other anti-gun states have passed or currently have active in their legislatures. Please consider submitting testimony AGAINST SB 1230 through the Hawaii Legislative website. For help creating an account and submitting testimony, click here.

Senate Bill 1230 massively expands “gun-free zones” where law-abiding citizens are left defenseless and also prohibits carrying firearms on private property unless the owner gives affirmative permission. In addition, it creates new subjective criteria for the issuance of carry permits to allow authorities to arbitrarily deny applicants.

Again, please consider submitting testimony AGAINST SB 1230.

CCW Bill Hearings Announced

From HiFiCo, Feb 3, 2023

Emergency alert that there are two significant gun control bills coming up for hearing next week. This is a quick notice, I’ll be sending more information this weekend.

City and County of Honolulu Bill 57

This is the city’s ban on Sensitive Places – schools, parks, government buildings, public places without a “guns allowed” sign, etc. We oppose the original draft as there is no historical precedent for these restrictions. We have worked with council member Tupola on drafting a compromise bill CD1 which limits the sensitive locations to which SCOTUS has previously mentioned: government buildings, polling places and requires standardized signage if a private property owners prohibits guns on their premises. It is something we don’t think is necessary, but can accept as it abides by the SCOTUS ruling.

Agenda & Testimony Instructions: LINK

Hearing is scheduled for Tuesday Feb 7 2023 at 1pm at Honolulu Hale. Please submit your written testimony prior to the hearing. We are asking for the maximum number of people to appear in person to testify, at least 100. You may also testify via videoconference request (see instructions).

State Legislature SB 1230 carry license and sensitive locations

This bill bans guns in sensitive places, similar to Bill 57, and prohibits the issuing of CCW permits to persons under vague terms or minor infractions, invasion of privacy, transport of firearms in a locked container, and other restrictive laws. We completely oppose this bill.

SB 1230: Text, Status

Please submit your written testimony at this link by 2-5-23 3pm, or you may still submit testimony later but it’ll be marked late. The hearing is on Monday 2-6-23 at 3pm, please attend in person or do remote testimony if possible. We are asking a thousand written testimonies to be submitted.
