Deadline approaches for applications for real property tax credit

News Release from City and County of Honolulu, 23 September 2022

The City & County of Honolulu offers a real property tax credit for homeowners who meet certain eligibility requirements.  If you qualify, the amount of credit that you will receive to reduce your property tax next year will be based on your income and your current year’s taxes.

The Eligibility Requirements are as follows:

Homeowner must have a home exemption in effect at the time of application and for the subsequent tax year.

Any of the titleholders do not own any other property anywhere.

The combined income of all titleholders cannot exceed $60,000.

How to obtain a Tax Credit Application:

Online: https://www.honolulu.gov/treasury

Call the Tax Relief Office at (808) 768-3205 to request an application and it will be mailed to you.

All Satellite City Halls.

The application deadline is September 30, 2022

Note: If you qualify for the credit, the credit will be applied to your property tax bill that you will receive in July of 2023.  You must apply annually for this credit.

Automatic Sprinkler Tax Credit deadline is September 30, 2022

O'AHU – The City and County of Honolulu offers a real property tax credit to homeowners in a qualified existing high rise residential building that has installed an automatic sprinkler system throughout the common areas or throughout the entire building, and has meet certain eligibility requirements. If you qualify, the credit amount of $2,000 will be applied to future real property taxes until this credit is exhausted. 

The Eligibility Requirements are as follows:

Homeowner must have a home exemption in effect at the time of application and for the subsequent tax year.

Homeowner must provide a building permit to show that the automatic sprinkler system was installed in accordance with applicable building and fire codes.

Homeowner must provide the Final Completion Certificate showing that the sprinkler system installation was completed and done according to the building code requirements.

Homeowner must file an application for the Automatic Sprinkler Tax Credit no later than twenty-four months after the Certificate of Completion is issued.

Call the Tax Relief Office at (808) 768-3205 to request an application and it will be mailed to you.

The application deadline is September 30, 2022.

Note: If you qualify for the credit, the credit will be applied to your property tax bill that you will receive in July of 2023. Any remaining credit will be applied to future real property taxes until the credit is exhausted.
