TRO Against New Police Chief’s son places him in UH Professor's spare bedroom

For Honolulu’s new Police Chief, his first news conference, held today, was, well, sub-optimal.

But outgoing Interim Chief Rade Vanic got leverage.

HNN reports

… Arthur “Joe” Logan held his first news conference since being named HPD’s new police chief to detail his adult son’s arrest on felony assault charges and to make clear he won’t be handling the case….

Zane Logan, 36, was arrested about 5 p.m. Tuesday in Ala Moana Beach Park for allegedly assaulting a victim with a hand tool. Another suspect, a 41-year-old woman, was also arrested. The victim refused treatment at the scene.

Hawaii News Now learned about the arrest Wednesday morning.

HNN sources confirmed a so-called police “highlight” with the information on the case was kept private with a “do not post to the media” alert put on it. That alert is usually reserved for sex assault and juvenile cases.

When HNN asked the department about why the case was handled in that way, the highlight was subsequently made public.

Vanic said the case was initially kept private over concerns about compromising the investigation, but he could not elaborate on why releasing details would do so.

“I can tell you that this case was handled as we would handle any case,” Vanic said. “This was handled properly.”

He added that Zane Logan remains in custody pending charges.….

There are a few details missing from that report.  Fortunately, you are reading Hawai’i Free Press.

A quick look at the HPD blotter shows the same HPD officer arresting both Zane Logan for Assault 2 and Leann Marie Brandt for Terroristic Threatening 1 at 6:05PM, Tuesday, May 24, 2022, at Ala Moana Park.

Question: Do you think Leann Marie goes by “Jewels”?

We’ll come back to that.

A search of E Court Kokua provides a long list of cases involving Zane Logan including a 2021 TRO filed against Logan by one Lawrence W Boyd, a retired UH professor.

If bells are ringing, you are one seriously akamai reader.  If not, check out these links:

With the details of the previous prostitution bust in Boyd’s spare bedroom, consider these tid-bits from the TRO “Declaration of Lawrence W Boyd:”

4. …I am married to Michelle L. Drake who is 62 years old. Michelle is also retired….Our residence is a two bedroom, two bath condominium in Waikiki....

5. I own the condominium.

6. I have a tenant Jewels Brandt who is staying on a month-to-month basis. She has been living here a little more than five years.

7. She occupies one bedroom in the condominium. As part of her tenancy it was a condition that Jewels was not allowed to have any visitors since the condominium is a shared living space with my wife and me. Jewels has steadfastly abided by this rule.

8. Her ex-boyfriend is Respondent Zane Logan.

9. During the entire time that Jewels lived with us she never invited
Respondent into the condominium.

10. Early 2020: I first met Respondent in early 2020 when he had climbed onto the condominium lanai….

12. December 8, 2020 Respondent climbed on to the condominium lanai and he entered the condominium through the patio door. This was without anyone's permission.  He then attacked Jewels, who ran away from him. Respondent then ran out of the condominium.  A Police Report was filed….

22. The Respondent, however, has forcefully entered the condominium on several occasions as outlined above, destroying my unit in the process.

23. I discovered that Respondent has a long criminal record, and I believe that he may be doing crystal methamphetamine, which makes him very unpredictable….

Boyd’s TRO was filed February, 2021.

Previous HPD Chief Susan Ballard resigned effective June 1, 2021.  The Police Commission began searching for a replacement.

According to E Court Kokua, the following occurred during that search:

Zane Logan received criminal citations July 28 and August 10, 2021.

In case 1DCW-21-0002744 Zane Logan pled guilty to Theft 4 on October 6, 2021.

On May 3, 2022 Zane Logan was charged with felony theft for allegedly stealing property in excess of $750 from Target.  He bailed out on $7,500 bond May 6, 2022.

On March 16, 2022 interim Chief Rade Vanic announced he would no longer be seeking appointment as Chief.

The Honolulu Police Commission announced its selection of Joe Logan as the new HPD Chief May 23, 2022.

Civil Beat reports:

The police department put a ‘do not post to the media alert’ on Zane Logan’s arrest until after they spoke to his father….Vanic said that it was not ‘completely unusual’ for a suspect’s family to be contacted before details of the arrest are released. Vanic explained that Logan was notified of his son’s arrest before the media to confirm that the suspect was his son….Logan must still be medically cleared before being sworn in. He said he does not know the HPD policy regarding ‘do not post to the media’ alerts on arrest information because he has been out of the department for 20 years….  Logan said he planned to talk to Vanic about making him his third-in-command as a deputy chief.

Did the Commission know how much leverage Zane Logan would provide?
