HB1823: Suicide Bill is Dead

from Hawaii Family Forum, April 29, 2022

Deadlines this week: With Some Really Great News

APR 28 - FINAL DECKING OF NON-FISCAL BILLS - Deadline for submitting non-fiscal bills for final reading by both chambers.

APR 29 - FINAL DECKING OF FISCAL BILLS - Deadline for submitting fiscal bills for final reading by both chambers. Fiscal bills include appropriation or spending bills, tax credits, etc., or any bill with a House Finance (FIN) or Senate Ways and Means (WAM) referral.

ANY BILLS THAT HAVE NOT REACHED THIS POINT IS DEAD.

There are some problematic bills that did not make their deadlines so we are pleased to report, that barring any extraordinary action by the legislature, they are dead.

That includes:

HB 1823.  The assisted suicide expansion bill.  We are extremely pleased to report that the conference committee did not deem this issue important enough to have a hearing.  This is a small miracle.  We were told that other issues were more pressing.  This issue will most likely be back next year.

SCR 206.  The Senate Concurrent Resolution supporting abortion.  The Senate resolution passed but the version that would have proceeded through the House was never heard in the final committee.

Upcoming Legislative Deadlines

MAY 5 - ADJOURNMENT SINE DIE -The end of session is the deadline for Final Reading of bills and adoption of resolutions. Adjournment sine die occurs on the last day of a Regular Session and indicates a suspension of the business of the legislature indefinitely. Next, the Legislature will certify the bills whose form both chambers have agreed to and will transmit or "enroll" those bills to the Governor.

I do plan to do a final report after session closes next week.  Mahalo to all of you who stand with us on these issues.

FROM AROUND THE NATION

Hawaii Family Forum Signs National Pro-Life Letter

Hawaii Family Forum and 31 Other Pro-Family Leaders Sign Letter Urging 'Bold Strategy To Protect Unborn Life'

A coalition of 32 pro-family policy council leaders, including Hawaii Family Forum, sent a letter today to House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy, House Minority Whip Steve Scalise and House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik urging that any commitment made to America as the nation awaits the U.S. Supreme Court's impending decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization "must include a bold strategy to protect unborn life."

The letter reads, in part:

"We, the undersigned, represent hundreds of thousands of Americans across the states who care deeply about the issues of life, family, and religious freedom. Although each of these issues is vitally important, the prospect of seeing Roe v. Wade undermined or overturned and the momentum currently behind the pro-life movement is unlike any we have seen before."

The letter is asking that any new leadership that may develop after the elections, works to ensure that any commitment to America includes a bold, clear, and articulate plan to protect the most vulnerable among us, the unborn.

Triple "F" Show: Faith and Family First

Answering to God, not the Government

On this episode of the Triple F Show (Faith and Family First), Jim Hochberg and I discuss the dilemma we have as people of faith when Governmental powers seem contrary to what we believe.
