Spewing CO2 Governor Jets off to Scotland Global Warming Confab

The carbon footprint of Hawaii Gov. David Ige's trip to Glasgow for COP26

PBN: … It’s 6,893 miles from Honolulu to Glasgow, Scotland, a round trip of 13,786 miles….

What is the carbon footprint of this jaunt?

An article on carbon dioxide production by air travel in The Guardian cites a German nonprofit, Atmosfair to state that “flying from London to New York and back generates about 986kg of CO2 per passenger."

From that we get a baseline of 0.14 kg of CO2 emitted per mile per passenger. Ige’s trip will weigh in at 1,958 kg per person, or 4,316 pounds — more than two tons of carbon dioxide emitted, just to shuttle Ige’s gubernatorial presence to the land of my ancestors.

But he’s not going alone. The release notes, “Gov. Ige will be attending COP26 with two members of his cabinet (DLNR Chair Suzanne Case and State Energy Office Chief Energy Officer Scott Glenn). Also accompanying the governor is one staff member and security personnel.”

All so Ige can join a convention of elites telling us that carbon dioxide is destroying the Earth and we need to stop pumping it into the atmosphere.

I assume Ige is at least flying commercial. Private jets have descended upon Glasgow by the hundreds.

“Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ £48million Gulf Stream has led a 400-strong parade of private jets into COP26 including Prince Albert of Monaco, scores of royals and dozens of ‘green’ CEOs — as an extraordinary traffic jam forced empty planes to fly 30 miles to find space to park,” reports The Guardian here. “On Sunday, MailOnline observed at least 52 private jets landing at Glasgow — while estimates put the total number flying in for the conference at 400. Conservative predictions suggest the fleet of private jets arriving for COP26 will blast out 13,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide in total — equivalent to the amount consumed by more than 1,600 Britons in a year.”

HAWAII DELEGATION HEADS TO SCOTLAND FOR GLOBAL CLIMATE NEGOTIATIONS, NOV. 1, 2021

NOTE: This is the first time Ige has left Hawaii since COVID began.

News Release from DLNR, Nov 1, 2021

(HONOLULU) – Governor David Ige is leading a group of state and county leaders to Glasgow, Scotland for COP26 (Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change), underway now and continuing through November 12.

COP26 is being heralded as the most consequential meeting of world leaders to discuss climate change since the UN Climate Change Conference in Paris in 2015. Hawai‘i was the first state to show its commitment to climate action by embracing the Paris Agreement in law and creating the state’s Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Commission. The state is also the first in the world to commit to a 100% clean energy goal.

Today, during the regular meeting of the Commission, Governor Ige outlined the importance of climate change considerations for Hawai‘i and our Pacific neighbors, and the sense of urgency the delegation is bringing to other world leaders.

“I want to make it clear that government action at the sub-national level is needed, do-able and in line with how our society can and should function. Climate change is an existential threat and like traditional navigators in Hawaiian voyaging canoes, we can see storm clouds ahead,” Governor Ige said.

He went on to detail the next generation of priority policies and high-impact actions the U.S. Climate Alliance is bringing forward at COP26. According to the Climate Alliance, this is to lead the world in the development of new, innovative, and effective climate policies and actions.

Hawai‘i is one of the original members of the Alliance, which now includes 25 governors who have committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, leading collectively and steadily to net-zero emissions (in the case of Hawaiʻi, below zero) as soon as practicable and no later than 2050.

The U.S. Climate Alliance formed in response to the U.S. withdrawal from the Paris Agreement in 2017. It has since rejoined global forces focusing on climate change. Earlier this year, the leadership of climate action in Hawai‘i was reflected in the significant role given to the Hawai‘i delegation to the IUCN World Conservation Congress in establishing the Climate Change Commission. Also, this year, a Hawai‘i Senate Concurrent Resolution declared a climate emergency.

“We are grateful that rejoining the Paris Agreement has enabled our country to renew its pledge to keep global warming under two degrees. The Hawaiʻi delegation to COP26 will continue to push for climate action and demonstrate that islands, such as the Hawaiian Islands, can lead the way,” Governor Ige added.

Governor Ige says the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of our connections with each other and the natural world, and how interconnected societies can work together to manage huge global threats, such as climate change.

The Commission is the highest advisory policy-making body in the state for climate change and comprises members from 20 different state and county departments, and legislators. It emphasizes nature-based solutions, green infrastructure, and carbon-smart practices to deal with climate change impacts. Its mission is to promote ambitious, climate-neutral, culturally responsive strategies for climate change adaptation and mitigation in a manner that is clean, equitable and resilient.

Commission co-chair Suzanne Case (DLNR) said nature-based solutions will help Hawai‘i go beyond zero emissions to a sub-zero future. “To do this, we need to capture emissions directly from the air through natural and working lands. Our target is to sequester more than we emit no later than 2045, if not sooner.”

In his remarks to the Commission, Governor Ige concluded, “We are embracing big ambitions because we know they lead to big actions. Reversing the climate crisis is critical to preserving our unique biodiversity, culture, and economy. Hawai‘i is ‘all in’ to address our climate crisis and this is the message we will be taking to COP26.”
